Cultivating
Tend, refine, return
Cultivating is a different posture than scaling. It means giving the work the time it needs, and being willing to come back to it. Good products are tended, not launched and left. Our pace is set by the work, not by a calendar.

The deliberate choice
The hardest part of building well is choosing what is worth building. We say yes to fewer things and mean it. Discernment is not a constraint on the work. It is the practice that lets the work be good.

The studio
Built carefully, in Christchurch.
Orchid Horizon is a small software studio based in Christchurch, New Zealand. We build tools for the parts of life worth cultivating, which for us means money, trader psychology, family, faith and livelihood. These are areas that ask for care rather than speed, and we have built the studio around that pace deliberately.
Between us we hold developer skills, an operational audit background and executive management experience, and we have found that the combination matters more than any one of us does alone.
We want products that get better with time, and users who stay because the work has earned it.
Funding
Backed by theWomen Entrepreneurs Fund.
Orchid Horizon won a Women Entrepreneurs Fund grant from Kura Tāwhiti Canterbury Community Foundation: $10,000 toward the founders’ living costs while the first two products were built. The fund exists to give women founders time, which is the thing a new studio has least of.

A third of the country. One bear hunt.
On 22 March 2020, days before the country went into lockdown, Deb Hoffman, one of our founders, started We’re Not Scared — NZ Bear Hunt: a Facebook group where families put teddy bears in their windows so children walking the neighbourhood had something to find. Within a fortnight, one in three New Zealanders had put a bear in the window.
The Bear Hunt was not a product. It was a community response to a hard moment. But it tells you something about this studio. The founder behind our marketing has built something at national scale, on instinct, in the gap between intention and action. That same instinct sits inside everything we make.
